Petrified wood is a fossil that forms when a tree or branch is buried by sediment and protected from decay due from oxygen and other organisms. Over time groundwater rich in dissolved minerals flows through the sediment, replacing the original plant material. This very thick slab is polished on one main face and both flat sides and shows the wood grain pattern and growth rings.
