Topaz is a silicate mineral composed of aluminum and fluorine and often used as a gemstone in jewelry. Topaz in its natural state is colorless or a golden brown to yellow. A variety of impurities and treatments may make topaz wine red, pale gray, reddish-orange, pale green, pink, or opaque.

Topaz is one of the hardest naturally occurring minerals with a relatively low index of refraction. It is mined in many places around the world.

Orange topaz, also known as precious topaz, is the conventional birthstone for November as well as the symbol of friendship and the state gemstone of the U.S. state of Utah. Blue topaz is the official state gemstone of the US state of Texas.

Brazilian imperial topaz can often have a bright yellow to deep golden brown hue, sometimes even violet. Many brown or pale topazes are treated to make them bright yellow, gold, pink, or violet colored. Naturally occurring blue topaz is very rare and if often heated or irradiated to produce a more desired blue.

Topaz has a specific gravity that ranges between 3.4 and 3.6 which causes it to be concentrated into placer deposits by stream currents.
