Fluorite - UK

$10.00

Location: Naughty Gnome Pocket, Diana Maria Mine, Weardale, North Pennines, Co. Durham, England, UK

Size: 1.78 x 1.43 x 1.07 inches

This piece looks amazing under long wave UV light and fluoresces an eerie white. The fluorite crystals also have what is called daylight fluorescence and look more of a purplish if there is any daylight hitting the specimen. So depending on where you display it the color may be more green or purple as shown in the pictures.

The pieces of Fluorite from this mine are highly fluorescent and the best thing is that they fluoresce with Long Wave (LW) which is what most collectors have. (90% of fluorescent minerals fluoresce are Short Wave (SW) but SW costs a lot more than LW.)

Photos 1 and 4 are under long wave using a V3 365nm UV Beast light. Photo 3 has some daylight hitting the specimen.

Fluorite (also called fluorspar) belongs to the halide minerals and is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It has a hardness of 4 and in its pure form it is colorless and transparent.  It often contains impurities which makes it a very colorful mineral in many collections.   In addition to its ornamental uses
